  • [Top Story]Donald Trump cancels military parade and blames local officials for soaring costs08/18 09:20

Donald Trump has attacked local officials in Washington DC for forcing the postponement of his prized military parade amid reports the cost had soared to $92 million (£72m), accusing them of inflating the price and declaring: “Now we can buy some more jet fighters!” Mr Trump, who reportedly wanted tanks rolling through the streets of Washington DC for his inauguration, was visibly impressed by France’s Bastille Day parade when he visited Paris in July 2017, and repeatedly remarked on French military might. He announced in February this year that he wanted a similar event for the United States, having initially suggested turning the July 4 Independence Day celebrations into a military ceremony. He then settled on a November parade, to mark the centennial of the First World War, and initial assessments put the cost at $10-$30 million.   Donald Trump was impressed by France's annual Bastille Day parade Credit: Gonzalo Fuentes/Reuters On Thursday the Pentagon announced it was being postponed, possibly for 2019, and Mr Trump in response angrily accused Washington DC officials of scuppering his plan. “The local politicians who run Washington, DC (poorly) know a windfall when they see it,” he tweeted on Friday. “When asked to give us a price for holding a great celebratory military parade, they wanted a number so ridiculously high that I cancelled it. “Never let someone hold you up! I will instead attend the big parade already scheduled at Andrews Air Force Base on a different date, & go to the Paris parade, celebrating the end of the War, on November 11th. “Maybe we will do something next year in DC when the cost comes WAY DOWN. “Now we can buy some more jet fighters!” Donald Trump and his wife Melania during the Bastille Day celebrations in 2017 Credit: AFP The mayor of Washington DC replied, saying: “Yup, I’m Muriel Bowser, mayor of Washington DC, the local politician who finally got thru to the reality star in the White House with the realities ($21.6M) of parades/events/demonstrations in Trump America (sad).” The idea had been popular among many Americans but drew scorn from critics, who said it would be a waste of money and was akin to events organised by authoritarian regimes. James Mattis, defence secretary, laughed at the reported cost and said there had been no cost estimation carried out. “Whoever told you that is probably smoking something that is legal in my state, but not in most states,” he said. “I’m not dignifying that number with any reply. I would discount that. "And anybody who said that, I almost guarantee you one thing, they probably said ‘I need to stay anonymous.’ No kidding, because you look like an idiot.” Donald Trump speaks to Navy and shipyard personnel aboard the nuclear aircraft carrier USS Gerald R Ford last year US media were quick to highlight how the ballooning costs of the proposed parade stood in contrast to his concern about the expense of conducting joint military exercises with South Korea. "We will be stopping the war games, which will save us a tremendous amount of money," Mr Trump said in June, after meeting North Korean leader Kim Jong-un. It later emerged that the drills cost about $14 million, a fraction of the price of a military parade. Others suggested the money could be better spent improving the lives of destitute veterans. "Until such time as we can celebrate victory in the War on Terrorism and bring our military home, we think the parade money would be better spent fully funding the Department of Veteran Affairs and giving our troops and their families the best care possible," said Denise Rohan, the American Legion's national commander. The United States normally holds military parades to mark the end of a conflict, such as in 1991 when president George HW Bush held a National Victory Parade in Washington to celebrate the end of the first Gulf War.......Search More News

  • [Top Story]Judge in trial of Donald Trump's former aide Paul Manafort says he received threats08/18 07:40

The judge presiding over the fraud trial of Paul Manafort, President Donald Trump's former campaign chairman, revealed on Friday that he has received threats and is under police protection. District Judge TS Ellis also told a court that he feared for the "peace and safety of the jurors". In the United States jury lists are presumed to be public unless a judge has good reason for keeping them secret. The judge said he would not be revealing the jurors' names because of his safety concerns. Jurors have been deliberating for two days following a two-week trial in which Manafort faces 18 charges of bank fraud and tax evasion. He did not give specifics of the threats but said he had been taken aback by the level of interest in the trial.  The judge said: "I've received criticism and threats. I imagine they (the jurors) would too. "I had no idea this case would excite these emotions. I don't feel right if I release their names." Mr Manafort also faces a second trial in September on charges of failing to register as a foreign agent based on his links with Russian and Ukrainian backed business work. Prosecutors have been careful not to mention the former political consultant's links to the US president but the trial has still been closely watched in Washington. Mr Trump has claimed his former campaign chief is the target of a "witch hunt", persecuted for his association with the president. As the jury continued to consider their verdict on Friday, Mr Trump called Mr Manafort a "very good person". When you look at what's going on, I think it's a very sad day for our country. "He worked for me for a very short period of time. But you know what, he happens to be a very good person and I think it's very sad what they've done to Paul Manafort." Judge Ellis said he also plans to release the transcripts of bench conferences currently sealed by the court with one exception - likely a discussion which relates to information from Mr Mueller's investigators about its ongoing investigation. "A thirsty press is essential in a free country," the judge said.......Search More News
