  • [Top Story]Netanyahu holds last-ditch talks to keep Israeli government together11/19 00:20

Benjamin Netanyahu, the Israeli prime minister, resisted calls for snap polls Sunday, saying elections now would be "unnecessary and wrong", ahead of what he called last-ditch talks to hold his embattled coalition together. Mr Netanyahu's Right-wing coalition was thrown into crisis Wednesday after the defence minister Avigdor Lieberman's resignation over a controversial Gaza ceasefire deal, leading to speculation over whether early elections have become inevitable. After Mr Lieberman's withdrawal along with his Yisrael Beitenu party, Mr Netanyahu's government was left clinging to a one-seat majority in the 120-seat parliament. Key coalition partners say that is unworkable. Mr Netanyahu, who has sought to delay calling elections, made his case at the start of a cabinet meeting on Sunday. He noted past instances when Right-wing governments had called elections that did not turn out as they had hoped. "We need to do whatever we can to avoid such mistakes," he said. Mr Netanyahu planned to meet Moshe Kahlon, the finance minister whose centre-right Kulanu party holds 10 seats, at later on Sunday for what he called a "last attempt" to keep the government together. Elections are not due until November 2019. Mr Kahlon has said he does not think it is possible to continue with the existing coalition. "Meanwhile, I don't see a rabbit or a hat." Naftali Bennett, the education minister of the far-right Jewish Home party, which holds eight seats in parliament, has demanded the defence portfolio as a way of keeping the government together. Netanyahu says he will take it over at least temporarily rather than hand the key ministry to one of his main right-wing rivals, though a last-minute deal could not be ruled out. On Saturday, Bennett told Israeli television that Lieberman had "collapsed the government". "There is no more government and we are heading towards elections," he said. "There is no other alternative."......Search More News

Egypt said on Sunday it would hold talks with Ethiopia in the next two weeks to iron out differences over an Ethiopian dam on the River Nile that Cairo sees as a threat to its water supplies. The two countries and Sudan have held a series of meetings over the $4 billion hydroelectric Grand Renaissance Dam, but have yet to reach a deal on managing flows and other issues. Trump made the remarks hours after the State Department said the government was still working on determining responsibility for the death of Khashoggi, a U.S.-based Washington Post columnist. JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Jalen Ramsey doesn't want to play for any team other than the Jacksonville Jaguars, despite what one of his recent posts on social media might indicate. The third-year cornerback made that pretty clear on Thursday, but he also admitted that he doesn't like the negativity from what he called "fake fans" around the franchise's disappointing 3-6 record heading into Sunday's matchup with the Pittsburgh Steelers. "I've said multiple times, over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over again that I want to play for one team my whole career," Ramsey said. Ramsey has one year remaining on his rookie contract, but the Jaguars are expected to pick up his fifth-year option this spring. He is also eligible to sign a long-term deal with the Jaguars once the 2018 season is complete. • [Sport]John Dorsey: Gregg Williams to get interview for 'attractive' Browns job11/18 15:50

BEREA, Ohio -- Interim coach Gregg Williams will be interviewed for the Cleveland Browns' coaching job, general manager John Dorsey said Wednesday. "I think Gregg Williams has done a really nice job," Dorsey said of Williams' two games in charge. Williams took over Oct. 29 when Hue Jackson was fired along with offensive coordinator Todd Haley. The Browns have split the two games they've played under Williams, losing to Kansas City and beating Atlanta. Dorsey said he has had meetings with other senior management to come up with a plan for this hire, which he said will begin in earnest after the season. He conceded he had a list of coaches in mind when he was hired, but said that's a natural part of his job and the list was "from head coach to quality control."
